Sources for Public Company Reporting: EPS, Segments, and Interim
Last reviewed
The standards and authorities behind PocketCPA's BAR lessons on Public Company Reporting: EPS, Segments, and Interim. The topic rests on ASC 260 / ASC 280 / ASC 270.
About this topic
A company whose five segments combine to a 1.7 percent margin has three businesses running at 13 percent or better and one losing almost half of its own revenue. Every one of those figures is correct. The combined one describes nothing that is actually happening inside the entity, and a reader holding only the face of the income statement never learns that. Taking an aggregate apart so a reader can see what is inside it is the work this Topic does three times over, on three different aggregates.
ASC 260 takes a period's income apart per share, on the assumption that everything capable of becoming a share already has. ASC 280 takes one income statement apart by business, along the lines the entity's own management already uses internally. ASC 270 takes an annual result apart by quarter, on the view that the year rather than the quarter is the unit of account. The SEC rules sitting on top of all three settle which forms carry the answers, on what schedule, and with what level of assurance behind them.
Key points
- Diluted EPS uses the treasury stock method for options and the if-converted method for convertible securities.
- Segment reporting follows the management approach: segments match what the CODM reviews.
- Interim financial reporting uses the integral approach: each quarter is part of the annual period.
- LIFO liquidations expected to be reversed by year-end are not recognized at interim dates.
